I would not have read it if the guy sitting next to me on my flight from Chicago to Seoul had not finished it and given it to me. Since some of the entries are short, the book contains pictures of her family and the general area to help add to the content. However, Rutka’s small journal is heavy in realizing that this was a young adolescent girl who had similar interests as I did at that age, yet had to cuaderrno with the constant fear of death and persecution.
Although from a historical perspective I longed for more information about the occupation, the personal details Rutka includes make the diary heartbreaking. While history books and conference papers have their place, of course, I feel like the memoirs of teens from this time period are an el cuaderno de rutka resource. I found the resources very helpful since this book was so short and would recommend looking at the resources at the back should you el cuaderno de rutka additional books.
A moving read on a young life cut short due to the Holocaust. Rutka’s diary is slim – only about 50 pages she wrote it for only 4 months.
